The sea, mountains, and deserts forced the ancient traders to follow a narrow strip of land at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Hebrews occupied this area which provided many advantages and disadvantages.

• They were on the trade routes from Mesopotamia to Egypt. (Genesis 37)
• When politically and militarily strong they were able to extract taxes.
• Being a Buffer Zone between Egypt and Assyrian, Hittites, and Babylonians meant their land was attacked and re:attacked.
• Land bridge between major political powers
