The Northern Kingdom began when Rehoboam refused to listen to the older men and following the advise of the younger men determined to be more harsh that his father, Solomon.

Jeroboam was ruler over the 10 northern tribes when the revolted from Rehoboam's proposed harsh rule.

Several different dynasties ruled the North. Many prophets were sent to the people of the north in order to get them to turn from their sin. HOWEVER, they finally were carried away into captivity by the Assyrians. The Northern Ten tribes never "officially" returned.

Often the North and South were torn by civil strife.
