NT - Cultural And Religious Background Of Palestinian Judaism

The New Testament did not occur in a vacuum. The social, religious, and political forces affected all aspect of the individual and community. Jesus mingled with and confronted the 1st Century milieu.

As you learn about the cultural and religious background of the 1st Century, attempt to make comparisons and contrasts with the people, events, and circumstances recorded in the New Testament.

The Pharisees read the Torah and were concerned with outward cleanliness and carefully keeping the law. They had build elaborate "interpretations," but had missed the point. Jesus comes along and says that it is the inside that counts. Truth is True, but interpretation can be wrong.

Cultural Coloring of Biblical Text

In your study this week, keep an open mind to the idea that some of our current Bible interpretations may be colored culturally.
